Choose a pair
Any grown male and female will do — species doesn’t matter. A shark and a jellyfish is a perfectly good couple.

Add a catalyst
Optional, and usually a nudge rather than a guarantee: toward glow, bigger fins, a mood, or something stranger.

Traits that show
Each species has signature features — a narwhal’s tusk, a hammerhead’s head, an axolotl’s frills — that always appear. Cross two species and their signatures compete for the child.
Traits that hide
Others are carried quietly and skip generations. A plain-looking fish can still pass on armour, horns or glowing eyes it never showed itself.
